Scotland’s Best Kept Secret

THE WOODS: A SONG BY IAIN ANDERSON

2009/2013

ALEXANDER PEACOCK

RUNNING TIME: 3 MINS

A depressed girl wanders into the woods only to find herself lost and pursued by an unknown figure.

BACKGROUND

On a break from filming A City You’ll Never Know in early 2009 a new film was put into production. This was to lead on thematically from A City... by exploring a female character that goes from a primal natural world to a twisted metropolis, further exploring the character of the masked character from the other film. The idea was dropped when the footage went missing and The Sketcher went into the shooting phase. It was later discovered during an archiving project at the end of 2013. Iain Anderson had mentioned creating a music video with a song he had wrote and the two were combined.

DIRECTOR NOTES

I was very excited about my idea for The Woods and had built up a fairytale world for it to take place in. It was to be surreal, convoluted, dark and delve deeper into character than any of my previous films. Sadly I lost the footage and presumed I had shot over it when making The Sketcher. For years it remained in my mind as a visually stunning and genuinely unique work in my oeuvre but when it finally was rediscovered and I watched the footage back I saw it was fairly amateur.  I can’t recall now if this was just a test shoot or if the rest of the film was intended to be this way. Regardless I’m glad to finally have put what remains together and to create an unusual backdrop to Iain’s music.
