A man crossing a hill at night discovers an unconscious girl in the grass and carefully tries to piece together what happened.

BACKGROUND

The Beacon was made to accomplish two purposes: to provide a test shoot of a key location for The Shame of Edinburgh; and to audition two actors for that film. The story was based on the real experience of an old friend of Peacock's and was conceived and shot in two hours.

DIRECTOR NOTES

The Beacon is one of my personal favourites. It wasn’t intended to be anything special but the simplicity and mystery came together in such a way that something special was created. The sound was entirely recorded in post-production, a technique I’d performed in several earlier films, usually without much success, but here it works well. The actors’ performances were perfect. The film probably could be improved by being slightly more substantial but equally it would lose something unique in the process.
